Ribs and Relatives

Today's favorite moments included . . .

. . . the biggest gathering of my relatives in my recent memory. Aunt Lisa and her family are in town, and we all gathered at Grandma's house for dinner. It was great to be there with so many people I know and love, and reinforce the ties that keep us close even when we’re far away.

. . . hearing Daddy tell Joy the story of how he and I met.

And another thing . . .

. . . Aunt Lisa served barbecued ribs for dinner. I’d actually never had them before, assuming there would be little satisfaction in nibbling so little meat off so much bone. Boy, was I wrong. I would have eaten even more than I did if I’d just had more room.

A Peahen and Blueberries

Today's not-so-favorite moments included:

. . . wanting to visit someone we like, but not being able to get in touch with them. :(

Today's favorite moments included . . .

. . . hearing a honking noise outside during breakfast, and looking out the window to see a peahen* wandering around the courtyard.

. . . standing on a hill with my daughter and watching the sun set into a molten pool of ocean.

. . . eating blueberry pancakes with triple berry syrup. And sausage. Mmmm, sausage . . .

Temple, Train, and Tacos

Today's favorite moments included . . .

. . . serving in the temple with my sweetheart.

. . . eating carne asada tacos from a taco truck.

. . . hugging Joy.

. . . rearranging my kids' train track with them.

. . . praying to find their missing engine . . . and finding it.

Swingin'

Today's favorite moments included . . .

. . . looking out the window and seeing that Daddy was home. Yay!

. . . shopping at Whole Foods with my kids. I rarely go there because it's a bit of a drive, but when I do I feel like I'm at Food Mecca. Joy loves it because our shopping cart gets to ride its own escalator next to our conventional one.

. . . dancing to swing music with Daddy.

And another thing . . .

. . . this morning Joy told me she had stepped in "car poop." I suspect she was referring to an oily patch in one of our neighbor's parking spots, but I thought it wisest not to inquire.

"I Love That Guy!"

Today's not-so-favorite moments included:

. . . putting egg nog in my Malto Meal because we were out of milk. Never, ever do that.

Today's favorite moments included . . .

. . . when I was playing a homemade matching game with Joy, and as she turned over a picture of good old Wolfgang her face lit up and she exclaimed, "Mozart! I love that guy!" Why, Joy? "Because he writes music!" Can't argue with that.

And another thing . . .

. . . I opted not to take our camera along when we walked to the store this morning, figuring that nothing notable would happen on such a routine outing. Of course, on our way home we saw a peacock walking down the sidewalk in front of us. It was a good reminder that remarkable things can happen in even the most mundane circumstances.

. . . Joy still likes pretending she's Curious George, and the more she gets into character during our matching games, the better I tend to do at them. She gets so focused on jumping from one side of the pile to the other that she doesn't pay attention to whether she's turning over Moses or a moose.

Chocolaty Goodness

Today's favorite moments included . . .

. . . surfing the web with Joy. I opened two windows, and we took turns using the mouse. I checked friends' blogs, and Joy checked the weather report on weather.com. The temperature here is supposed to hover around 70 for the next ten days. It's really not fair to the rest of the country.

. . . hearing Joy request her multi-grain English muffin "not toasted, with chocolaty goodness [Nutella]."

And another thing . . .

. . . I survived another day of teaching preschool. [big sigh of relief]

Snowballs and Mutts

Today's favorite moments included . . .

. . . noticing that yesterday's post made someone smile. :)

. . . swinging at the park with Daniel.

. . . Joy "reading" Goodnight Moon thus: "a comb, and a brush, and a bowl full of mutts [mush]."

. . . reading Nienie Dialogues. The first photo on her Christmas Day post is magical.

And another thing . . .

. . . at the park today, we played with a little boy named Gavin and his mom. When Joy gave their paratrooper a mighty throw up into the air, the mom clapped for her. I'm so grateful when people love my kids, because it reminds me to enjoy them, too, in additional to reminding them to obey rules, eat right, and stay out of traffic.
