Joy Will Surely Favor the History Books . . .

Sometimes a comic strip just speaks to me.

President Hinckley spoke fondly of growing up in a home with over a thousand books containing millions of words. I want that for our family, too. I love how the internet provides instant access to info on any subject, but there's just something delicious about picking up a real live book, flipping through its pages, and suddenly finding yourself immersed in a whole new world.

bibliophilians...
that's great.

we have piles and piles of books around here. and so do the kids. the 4 shelves are bursting...and stacks in front of them.

we are constantly trying to simplify and keep just the essentials in our home/lives. we even get rid of books sometimes. but, usually that's because we're dumping an old paperback that we now have a great hardbound copy of.

my husband and i are both fervent book fanatics - and encourage our children to be as well.

i love to read about a fellow addict.

My father-in-law had a heart attack at 42. The hardest part for the paramedics was getting the stretcher out through the narrow hallway in my in-laws' house that is rendered even more narrow by the bookshelves along one side :-) He recovered, so my amusement isn't callousness--just delight at being related to more bibliophiles.

Would the term "bibliophilian" be sort of like amphibian in implying a creature who can live both in and out of something? Then a bibliophilian is someone who can live both in a story and outside a book.

Hilarious. I am a book lover too. In fact, one of the hardest things about the potential of a daughterless life is all the books I will never share.

Yes, there is something delicious about books, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I am generalizing a bit here, but what is it that makes books so appetizing over other forms of media (such as TV, radio, and the Internet)?

You mentioned your love for books, but not exactly why. It is so much faster to get information from other forms of media like TV, but most of the time we talk of the bad and damage it causes. We don't talk that way about books most of the time and I would like to know why? :)

One of my favorite things about the movie "Sabrina" is that Sabrina's father became a chauffer so that he could enjoy reading books. Now that's a book lover!
(Maybe that's why I'm a stay-at-home mom. So that I can have more reading time -- especially now that my kiddles are all in school.)

Christie, that movie made me seriously consider a career as a chauffeur. Unfortunately, I'm a lousy driver.

Christopher, you're right - there is something elusively delicious about books. I'll have to think about what it might be . . .
