What A Girl Wants

Today's not-so-favorite moments included . . .

. . . virtually every moment of this day. Yesterday I felt 80% well; today I felt 80% terrible.

Today's favorite moments included . . .

. . . cuddling with my kids (even though my back hurt).

And another thing . . .

. . . this day provided an interesting object lesson about needs vs. wants. I felt eight kinds of miserable, and desperately wanted my husband to come home early to help and provide moral support. But I didn't need him to come home early, whereas he definitely needed to be at work preparing for a big presentation next week. Some wishes aren't granted, and yet we survive.

. . . this post title is also the title of a teen chick flick in which Amanda Bynes plays Colin Firth's long lost daughter. It was fun in a cheesy, predictable sort of way. The best part was watching Firth rock out in leather pants in front of a mirror as his daughter helped him rediscover his wild side. Also, you know you're old when you have no interest in the hip teenage musician Amanda hooks up with; you'd rather be dancing with her dad Mr. Darcy--I mean Colin Firth.

I'm sorry you still feel so sick.

I am starting to get better. I went to the doctor and discovered that I do indeed have strep throat. Alas for the days of !mmunity! I was pretty sure before going that that was what I had, and finally decided to err on the side of shelling out for a doctor's visit and taking antibiotics. I do believe in modern medicine even though I have found that I am vexed by about 50% of doctors, their unwillingness to answer questions, and their hubris.

We've been in NM since mid-October. We're living in Los Alamos, Ed's home town, and he's doing computer security for the DOE, or will as soon as his security clearance is processed. We were actually out in CA over Christmas. I emailed you at your yahoo account previous to our visit but perhaps it got sent to your junk mail? I'm sure it won't be the last visit we make now that we're closer.

I hope you feel better soon. Good for you for being able to distinguish between needs and wants. Also, some belated feedback--I like the structure of your blog now. It helps to balance out positive and negative. The humor's good too! I am missing the longer more introspective or philosophical posts you sometimes had but that's because I miss thoughtful discussions with you. I do understand that this format consumes less of your time, reserving more for family and other interests. I'll take whatever blogging you do because I appreciate you so much. I love you, my friend. I also respect you and the directions you're going in life. I remember your perfectionist tendencies and suspect motherhood isn't easy because you compare your worst moments to your ideal of what you wish to be. For that reason, I'm very happy to see you focusing on your best moments of each day too.

Cathy,

I'm sorry I missed you over the holidays. I've traded the yahoo address for a gmail one (which I just emailed you from).

I'm glad you enjoy my new blog format. I do, too, which is probably why I've managed to stick with it this time. Occasionally I'm tempted to write something long and introspective, but those posts always absorbed so much of my day and my brain that I almost dreaded writing them. The occasional short and introspective post suits me better.

I'm grateful that you comment here and there. It's good to hear from you, too. I've always enjoyed talking with you.

Glad you're starting to feel better. Hooray for antibiotics!

I also have wondered about needs and wants, since sometimes my wants go unheeded as 'just wants.'

But I was interested in something that I found out in a Sunday School lesson a few weeks ago. It talked about our baptismal covenants and sent us to D&C 20:37 to find them and then asked the question "how should these covenants affect our daily actions?" and then sent us to Mosiah 18:8-10 for the answer.

The thing that I found interesting was later in Mosiah 18. In verse 29, it talks about how Mosiah's people walked uprightly before God, imparting to one another both temporally and spiritually according to their needs and their WANTS.

Apparently our righteous wants should be taken into account, even if on a particular day it is not possible for someone we love to meet that want.

Very true. Even the law of consecration in the early days of the Church was set up to divide possessions among the people according each person's "wants and his needs, inasmuch as his wants are just" (D&C 82:17).

The challenge for me, sometimes, is distinguishing which desires are needs that NEED to be fulfilled, and which are wants that may need to take a back seat to other considerations.

Hahaha!! I realized that I was old when I watched Sound of Music again and realized that Captain Von Trapp was rather good looking!! Gotta love getting old! I'm glad you are feeling better. (Read later posts)

Yeah, just wait - someday we'll think Sean Connery looked better in Red October than he did as James Bond.
